Oil Pulling

The following is a remnant of an email to Lara from 2-3 weeks ago:

Tagged a post about this on Pinterest.  Was interested enough to try this out myself..  So I'm thinking I will try to be consistent and do this for a few weeks.  Found some Organic virgin coconut oil in a specialty grocery store in town...sort of like a Baeslers.  The oil liquefies as soon as it goes in your mouth...or touches skin (I've been reading awesome benefits of using it on skin too...and hair).  Anyways....just thought this was interesting, and I've been getting into more natural things instead of using tons of chemical...I feel like many of my issues are probably from diet or immune system, chemicals usually just make those things worse, or aren't as good as the natural thing.

I am starting this tonight, and thinking it will help heal where my 3 wisdom teeth were extracted if nothing else, as I am NOT a good healer. Below is an interesting site about it.

And, I do NOT like coconut, but the oil is like a lighter version  after the initial hesitation to put a small spoonful in my mouth...its a light, kind of pleasant taste.

From the article
"Some people think I’m crazy when I tell them that oil pulling can help those with asthma, allergies, chronic fatigue, diabetes, migraine headaches, PMS, and chronic skin problems. Oil pulling works by detoxifying or cleansing the body. In this way, disease promoting toxins are removed, thus allowing the body to heal itself. As a consequence, health problems of all types improve"

"The first thing that most people notice when they start oil pulling is an improvement in their oral health. Teeth become whiter, breath becomes fresher, and the tongue and gums take on a healthy pink color.  Even problems such as bleeding gums, tooth decay, and gum disease are greatly diminished or completely healed."

So It was 1 minute left and I started to feel nauseous .....read more of this article and this is what I found. (wasn't sure if it was because the oil or previous stomach upset from the day...) Felt very sick the rest of the evening.  Turns out you also must wait 4 hours after eating last to do this (I had only eaten an hour or so before), which is why many people choose to do this first thing in the morning.

"Toxins are pulled from the body the very first time you try it. One of the first cleansing symptoms you will experience is an increased flow of mucous from your throat and sinuses. Mucous drainage is one of the body’s methods of removing toxins. While you are pulling, mucous may build in the back of your throat. You may even have to expel the oil and clear the mucous from your throat before reaching a full 20 minutes. That’s okay, take another spoonful of oil and continue until you’ve pulled for a total of 15-20 minutes. You may also experience a little nausea and perhaps even need to vomit as your body expels toxic waste. Other symptoms may also arise temporarily. These symptoms will subside as your body becomes cleaner and you become more comfortable with oil pulling. Unlike other methods of detoxification that last for only a short time, oil pulling should become a regular part of your daily schedule, like brushing your teeth."

5 days later: I had my 10 day check-up after my wisdom teeth extractions. My dentist was AMAZED at how much my mouth was healed!  He stated that there were no holes! I had healed that fast (it usually takes at least 3 weeks).  When I told him about oil pulling, he said 2 of his other patients do that and they both have great teeth and especially gums! Interesting!  I am continuing my morning regimen with this, after it can't hurt, and already I have seen some benefits.

It's Jan

As she said, Lara and I have been collaborating for a while now on cosmetics,  beauty, and health tips and ideas. We decided why not write it down for more of a public venue. So I guess this is my intro to me. I now live in Louisiana, about an hour and a half from the place I grew up.

I now work as an Speech Therapist in the school system, and thanks to Lara....am addicted to cosmetics.  I have recently been interested in more organic/home remedies for beauty and health, as opposed to just taking a pill or buying something loaded with extra chemicals. I also don't mind trying out the less expensive products, since that has what I have been doing most of my life, and have only recently begun to dabble in going to higher quality/professional cosmetic retailers

My favorite places to get cosmetics are Wal-Mart, Sephora, and Ulta.  I have never been to a Mac store. My favorite as of yet is Ulta and Sephora. I love the ability to try out EVERYTHING they sell (at least of the 'prestige' cosmetics). I mostly go to Ulta since a store is about 15 minutes from where I live, and the closest Sephora is about 2 hours away.

Speaking of Ulta, I will show you what I sent Lara just this morning! Lol...I need to remember to blog instead of email.

Just got the newest Ulta newsletter in.  It's buy one get one 50% off for NYX. Look online at all of their NYX items.  The few things I have from NYX I love. I'm gonna have to go there and check out more of their stuff.  They are so inexpensive too.

I have frost beige in this, but the other colors look pretty too.  Love this, it stays on all day and is very pretty.

Very interested in this.

Wish List

I can’t say I thought I'd find myself a blogger (and I’m not sure that writing one blog constitutes you as one), but here I am. Blogging about beauty. The idea for this blog is entirely credited to my best friend, Miss Janice. She and I send emails to each other about our latest beauty finds. Genius struck Jan when she suggested I start a blog to share finds with more people. I countered that she should also participate as she has great finds and an analytical mind to form opinions on products. And here we are.

We may not have the budget that many beauty bloggers do. But what we do have is a bit of writing ability, the love of finding great and reasonably priced products, and the desire to share our finds with a broader audience. And so without further ado I present you with my current beauty and make up wish list. Look out for my next post, “What’s in your make up bag?”

First up is a product from Estée Lauder, a brand that I fell in love with through my grandmother. One look at her luminous skin and you’ll understand why. Their skincare is top-of-the-line and I use one of their eye creams every day (we can talk about skin care in another post). Their make up is excellent as well and, as they own MAC Cosmetics and several other companies, is definitely up to snuff.

The Estée Lauder product I am currently vying for is their Sumptuous Two Tone Eye-Opening Mascara.

I’ve used colored mascara products before, including a blue mascara from Rimmel, and love the idea of adding color to your lashes. Jet black eyelashes will always be my favorite but this adds an interesting twist and would enhance your eye color. One way of wearing it would be to use the black mascara on your upper lashes and the colored mascara on your lower lashes.

The second product on my wish list is Ciaté Caviar Manicure.

I’m a fan of embellishing my nails and this product looks like it would do just that. Purchase of a Ciaté Caviar Manicure set includes a nail polish and caviar pearls. I would definitely like to try the black set.

Last but not least on my current wish list are nail appliqués. The idea of this product was initially not palatable for me as it seemed a bit tacky and because I love my manicures. But after hearing several people rave about them, I’ve decided that I should try it out.

My plan is to purchase a Halloween-themed appliqué as an initial trial.

I could add tons more to this list, but these three are interesting and fun. In December, I'll likely write a "what I got for Christmas post" as related to beauty.
